Birmingham/ Jefferson
Civic Center
Birmingham, Alabama

The Birmingham/Jefferson Civic Center’s $130 million dollar expansion was designed to enlarge and unite the city and county’s civic activities.  Included in this renovation the exhibit hall was expanded, a new medical products mart was created, a major hotel renovation and addition was designed to compliment the civic center, and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame was relocated.

As landscape architectural consultant to the project architect, NLA was responsible for the design and construction detailing of all areas outside the building to the street edge. Street trees and other landscape elements provided human scale to the massive buildings and vehicular corridor bisecting the complex.

Landscape details included were: adequate parking, viable ground-level retail, convenient and safe access, secure drop offs, signage and pedestrian crosswalks.  Convenient and safe access was very important to the success of the project.  The landscape design also included an interior courtyard, entry plaza, seating beneath tree bosques, and a 105 foot long, 12 foot high cascading water wall.
