Birmingham
Southern College
Birmingham-Southern College is a nationally ranked
private, liberal arts college of 1,500 students. The college has a strong
reputation as a leading academic and arts institution. The campus was in
need of a master plan to coalesce the collection of varying building and
landscape styles with projected housing, academic and administrative
building and open space needs. Nimrod Long and Associates was chosen to
analyze the functions and aesthetics of the campus and develop a new
master plan for its 188 acre site.
The master plan gives the campus back to the pedestrian. The heavily
traveled road dividing the academic quadrangle from the dormitory
quadrangle has been removed. New pedestrian systems are accessible and
create dramatic views of the hilly campus. New building sites have been
chosen to reinforce axial views and strengthen existing quadrangles.
Parking has been relocated outside of the campus core. Roads loop around,
rather than through the main campus. The master plan creates outdoor rooms
that have enlivened the campus. |
